When the nominations for the 89th annual Academy Awards are announced on the morning of Tuesday, January 24th, I’ll be glued to the live stream to prep for Oscar Binge ’17.
In 2015, I woke up to Oscar nominated films I had mostly not seen – and that was very unusual. So I made my list of must-sees and watched 33 films in 37 days. Last year, it was 29 movies binged in 32 days. This goes way beyond the big categories and all the way to the effects, score and shorts categories. And so, for the 33 days that fall between the noms and the awards broadcast, I’ll immerse in the third year of my annual Oscar Binge trying to see as many nominated films as I can.
Since last fall, I’ve been pre-bingeing the buzziest films including superlative-laden La La Land, screenplay standout Hell or High Water, quirky Florence Foster Jenkins, foreign film frontrunner A Man Called Ove, special effects stunners Rogue One and Fantastic Beasts plus short-listed doc 13th.
While we’re waiting for the announcement next week, I’ve got my eye on Arrival, 20th Century Women and Hidden Figures as well as Lion and Jackie to sneak in. Over the coming weeks, I’ll share my strategy to see as many of the films as possible so you can join Oscar Binge. In the mean time, Happy Awards Season!
