Hidden Figures: Why Don’t We Know This Amazing Stuff?

Hidden Figures reveals to us the story behind the genius women of color who helped NASA get the space program off the ground. As gifted mathematicians and engineers, they faced the challenges of breaking gravity and the racial inertia of 1961 America.

It has a sort of charm that leaves you feeling lighter and cheered up – and even inspires applause in the theater. And it was so wonderful to see several moms and young daughters there so those little girls can grow up knowing what we never got to know until now.

I left this movie feeling like I’ve been lied to for 40 years – like we’ve been betrayed somehow. Why are we just hearing about these women now? I’ve seen space movies for my entire life and nobody wanted to mention the women who helped put the US up there? To paraphrase Armageddon, “talk about the wrong stuff.”

Verdict: Charming and very palatable lesson in our history. I’d have seen it even without Oscar Binge, for sure. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae will fill you with pride.
